Mikao Usui

Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865, in Taniai village, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Descended from a noble samurai lineage, Usui was a brilliant, deeply inquisitive scholar who traveled extensively throughout Japan, China, and Europe studying Tendai Buddhism, Shintoism, Taoist energy practices, Western medicine, and martial arts (*Yawara*).

Throughout his life, Usui was driven by a single burning question: *How did ancient spiritual masters—such as the Buddha and Jesus—perform miraculous physical healings using nothing more than their bare hands?*

In March 1922, seeking ultimate spiritual clarity (*Anshin Ritsu-Mei*), Usui ascended **Mount Kurama**, a sacred mountain north of Kyoto. He embarked on a strict 21-day water-fasting meditation (*Shugan-ho*). On the midnight of the 21st day, as he sat in deep meditation, a sudden bolt of luminous spiritual energy struck his crown chakra. Usui experienced *Satori* (enlightenment) and saw glowing Sanskrit symbols of light. When he descended the mountain, he discovered that his hands radiated intense heat and biophotonic energy, instantly healing a stubbed toe and severe toothache.

Recognizing that this bio-energetic healing power was not a personal gift to be hoarded, but a natural universal capability latent within all human beings, Mikao Usui opened the **Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai** (Usui Spiritual Energy Healing Society) in Harajuku, Tokyo, in April 1922.

On September 1, 1923, the catastrophic **Great Kanto Earthquake** struck Tokyo and Yokohama, killing over 140,000 people and injuring hundreds of thousands.
